My Messy Journey to Fixing That Quello Thing
Alright so I kept getting annoyed with these crappy results from my quello setup. You know the feeling – stuff just wasn’t clicking right? Every Monday I’d promise myself I’d figure it out. Finally got sick of my own excuses and dove in headfirst last Tuesday.

Started with the basics cause honestly I didn’t even know where the problem was. First thing I tried? Just smashing more keywords into the settings. Like dumping a whole bottle of hot sauce into soup thinking it’ll help. Yeah… made everything worse. Got so many false positives my reports looked like alphabet soup. Total waste of 3 hours.
So I went old school. Grabbed a notebook – an actual paper one – and tracked every single interaction for two straight days. Wrote down stuff like:
- What time I ran queries
- Exactly what I typed
- How many useless results came back
- Which ones made me wanna throw my laptop
Turns out my big mistake was treating quello like Google. That “just type anything” approach? Disaster. Found out it really hates long rambly questions. On Wednesday morning I tried chopping my queries down to 2-3 punchy words. Like changing “show me last month’s sales for red sneakers in Ohio” to just “red sneakers Ohio”. Bam. Suddenly actual useful numbers popped up. Felt stupid for not trying this sooner.
The real breakthrough came Thursday when I messed with timing. Ran the exact same search at 9am, noon, and 4pm. Couldn’t believe my eyes – afternoon queries ran 40% faster with cleaner outputs. My theory? That’s when the stupid thing finally wakes up after lunch.
Here’s what finally worked after all that trial and error:
- Keeping searches short like texting
- Hitting enter around 2-3pm
- Ignoring the first two results
- Grabbing the third one that looks half decent
- Immediately running the next query while it’s hot
Took my success rate from maybe 1 in 5 to about 3 in 4 decent outputs. Not perfect but hey, finally stopped wanting to kick the router every evening. Still takes patience but at least now I’m not wasting hours yelling at a loading screen.
