I heard some folks talkin’ ’bout words, words with only “a” as a vowel. Sounds kinda interestin’, ain’t it? Just that one letter “a” makin’ all the vowel sounds. Let me tell you, there’s more of them words than you might think. It made my head spin thinking about it.
Words with “A” as a Vowel
Now, I ain’t no schoolteacher, but I reckon I know a thing or two ’bout words. We use ’em every day, don’t we? So, these words, they got all sorts of letters, but the only vowel sound you hear is that “a” sound. Like in “cat.” That’s a simple one. You got your “c” and your “t,” and right smack-dab in the middle is that “a.” That “a” is the only vowel sound in cat.
Then there is “hat”. Same as “cat,” “hat” only got that one “a” makin’ a sound. “Man,” that’s another one. That word “man” has that only “a” as a vowel. And then “can.” That word only has “a” as a vowel. You see what I mean? They’re everywhere, these words. You start lookin’ for ’em, and you’ll find ’em all over the place. Words like “hand” and “band”, only “a” as a vowel in both those words.

There is “dad”. You know, like when you’re talkin’ ’bout your papa. “Dad” only got that one “a” sound. Or “bad.” When somethin’ ain’t good, it’s “bad.” And there’s “sad” too. When you’re feelin’ down in the dumps, you’re “sad.” “Dad”, “bad”, and “sad”, all with only “a” as a vowel.
Then you got words like “back.” Like your back that gets sore from bendin’ over in the garden all day. Or “pack.” Like when you’re packin’ your bags to go visit your kinfolk. “Back” and “pack” only have “a” as a vowel. Or words like “gas”. Like what you put in your car to make it go. “Gas” only got that one “a” sound.

Let’s see, what else? Oh, there’s “jazz”. That’s that music, you know. “Jazz” only got that one “a.” And “fax”. I don’t rightly know much ’bout that one, but I hear folks talkin’ ’bout it. They say it’s some kinda machine. Anyway, “fax” only got that “a” sound too.
And “lamp”! We all need a “lamp”. How else are we gonna see at night? Only “a” as a vowel in “lamp”. Or “brand”. My favorite “brand” of coffee is the strongest one. Only “a” as a vowel in “brand”. I could go on and on. “Ham”, “has”, “had”, all only have “a” as a vowel.

There is words like “crab”. You know, them things that crawl sideways on the beach? “Crab” only got that one “a.” And “lab”. Where them scientists do their experiments. “Lab” only got that “a” sound, too. Or how about “map”? A “map” is useful, especially when you are trying to find some place. Only “a” as a vowel in “map”.
We also have the word “sap”. That sticky stuff that comes outta trees. “Sap” only got that one “a.” And “tap.” Like when you tap on somethin’ with your finger. “Tap” only got that “a” sound. “Park” is another one. That is where you go to relax. Only “a” as a vowel in that one.
