Getting There and First Impressions

Packed up my clubs on a Tuesday morning, I think it was. Drove over there. Finding the entrance wasn’t too bad, pretty straightforward. Pulled into the parking lot, seemed like plenty of spots, which was a good start. Walked up to the pro shop. The building looked like it’s been around a while, nothing fancy, but that’s fine by me. I’m there to golf, not to admire architecture.

Went inside to check in. The fella behind the counter, well, he got me sorted. Didn’t have a tee time, just walked in. He found a spot for me pretty quick. Paid my green fee, which was reasonable, gotta say. That was a plus. Got a cart, one of those standard gas-powered ones. It coughed a bit when it started, but hey, it moved.

The “Practice” – Hitting the Links

So, I headed to the first tee. Took a few practice swings. The air was decent, not too hot yet. Looked down the fairway. Okay, here we go. My first drive… not bad, actually. Landed somewhere in the middle-ish. Good start to the practice, I thought.

Then I started really lookin’ around as I played. The tee boxes were a bit… well, they’d seen better days. Kinda worn down in spots, a bit uneven. Had to search for a good patch of grass to stick my tee in a couple of times. Minor stuff, but you notice it.

The fairways. Hmm. They were… okay. Some patches were nice and green, others were a bit thin, kinda dry. You know, a bit inconsistent. My ball would land, and sometimes it’d sit up nice, other times it’d be in a tighter lie than I expected. Made for some interesting approach shots, that’s for sure. I guess that’s part of the practice, dealing with different lies.

  • Tried to focus on my swing.
  • Really worked on my iron play from those varied lies.
  • Chipping around the greens was definitely a test.

And the greens. Man, the greens. They were fast in some spots, slow in others. And a bit bumpy. I’d line up a putt, thinking I read it right, and the ball would just kind of bobble off-line. Putting was an adventure, let me tell ya. I spent a good chunk of my time just trying to get the pace right. Some putts I felt I hit perfectly just didn’t do what I thought they would. Frustrating, but again, all part of the game, I guess. Forced me to really concentrate on my stroke.

A Few Other Things I Noticed

The bunkers, or sand traps, whatever you wanna call ’em. Some had decent sand, others were pretty compacted. Almost like hitting off a dirt road in a couple of them. My sand wedge got a workout, and so did my patience.

Pace of play wasn’t too bad for a while, then I ran into a slower group. That happens everywhere, though. Gave me some time to think about my next shot. Or just stare at the mountains in the distance. Henderson’s got some nice views, gotta give it that.

The layout itself? It was alright. Some interesting holes, a few straightforward ones. Nothing that really blew my mind, but it was a golf course. It had 18 holes, flags, and all that. Water hazards came into play on a few holes, which always adds a bit of spice. I managed to donate one ball to the cause. Standard procedure for me.

So, What’s the Verdict?

By the time I finished up my round, I was pretty tired. It was a decent enough way to spend a few hours and whack a golf ball around. Practiced a lot of recovery shots, that’s for sure. Would I rush back? I dunno. For the price, it’s a place to play golf. You get what you pay for, mostly. It ain’t gonna be like those fancy Vegas courses, not by a long shot. But if you just wanna get out and swing the clubs and not empty your wallet, well, Wildhorse is there. It’s an option. Just keep your expectations in check, that’s all I’m sayin’. I got my practice in, some good, some a bit rough, just like the course itself. That’s just how it goes sometimes.
