My Tussle with Getting Things Lined Up
Alright, let me tell you about these alignment discs. It wasn’t some big, planned project, you know? It started because I was putting together this small cabinet, like a cheap flat-pack thing. Got the sides up, tried to slide the first shelf in, and bam – it was crooked. One side was definitely sitting lower than the other. Annoying, right?

So, I first tried the usual stuff. Shoved some cardboard under one corner. Looked terrible, didn’t really fix it properly. Then I remembered seeing these little plastic discs somewhere, maybe in a hardware store or someone’s toolbox. Didn’t even know their proper name then, just thought of them as little leveling circles.
Finding and Using the Discs
Went digging through my own messy workshop drawers. Found a small baggie of them! Different thicknesses, mostly plastic. Some were hard, some slightly softer. Looked like they were meant for exactly this kind of thing.
Here’s what I did:
- I took the shelf back out.
- Looked closely at the bottom edge of the cabinet side that seemed low.
- Picked one of the thinner discs first. Didn’t want to overshoot.
- Slid it under the front corner of the low side.
- Tried the shelf again. Better, but still not quite there.
- Okay, took out the thin disc. Put a slightly thicker one in.
- Tried the shelf again. Bingo! Sat nice and level this time. Felt solid.
It wasn’t complicated, really. More trial and error. I pushed the disc around a bit with my finger until it felt like it was supporting the right spot. Had to make sure it wasn’t sticking out or looking obvious.
Did They Work? Yeah, Pretty Much
Yeah, they absolutely worked for this job. The shelf went in straight, and the whole cabinet felt more stable once everything was tightened up. It wasn’t wobbly anymore.

These discs are simple things. Just little pieces of plastic, mostly. But they saved me a headache. Better than folded cardboard, for sure. I guess they spread the load a bit better too. I kept the leftover discs, tossed them back in the drawer. Figure they might come in handy for leveling a picture frame on a wonky nail or something else down the line. Simple solution for a simple problem, that’s how I see it.
