Are Reptar Bars Safe to Eat? See Ingredients Here

Alright, so let me tell you about these reptar bars. Saw something the other day, maybe an old cartoon clip, I don’t know, but it got me thinking about those crazy green things. Remember those? From that kids’ show? Anyway, decided I had to try making ’em myself. Seemed like a fun thing to do, you know, break up the routine.

First thing, I had to figure out what the heck was even in them. The cartoon version? Just looked like green goo inside chocolate. Not much to go on. So I looked around online, found a few ideas. Most pointed towards some kind of chocolate bar with a green caramel or nougat filling. Sounded doable.

Getting Started

Went to the kitchen, started pulling stuff out. Needed chocolate, obviously. Grabbed a couple of cheap milk chocolate bars. Then for the green filling, that was the tricky part. Decided to try a caramel route first.

  • Butter
  • Sugar (brown and white, just threw some in)
  • Some corn syrup I had lying around
  • A splash of milk or cream, can’t remember which
  • Green food coloring. Lots of it.

Making the caramel was messy. Stuck to the pan like crazy. Had to really watch it so it didn’t burn. Added the green dye near the end. Man, it took way more than I thought to get that weird, bright green color. Looked kinda radioactive, honestly. Let that cool down a bit, but not too much, otherwise it’d get rock hard.

Putting it Together

Next, melting the chocolate. Did that in the microwave, short bursts, stirring in between. Didn’t want to seize it up. Got myself one of those silicone bar molds, figured that’d be easiest. Poured a layer of chocolate in the bottom of each mold cavity. Tried to spread it up the sides a bit with a spoon. That was fiddly work.

Then I spooned the green goo – uh, I mean, the caramel – on top of the chocolate layer. Left some space at the top. Let that sit for a minute. Then poured the rest of the melted chocolate over the green stuff, sealing it all in. Smoothed the tops as best I could.

The Waiting Game and The Result

Shoved the whole mold thing into the fridge. Had to wait for it to set. Felt like forever. Checked it like three times. Finally, popped them out of the mold. They looked… okay? Kinda lumpy, not the perfect bars you see in stores, but definitely homemade.

And they were green inside! That part worked, at least. Took a bite. Pretty sweet. Like, really sweet. The caramel was chewy, chocolate was chocolatey. Nothing ground-breaking, but hey, they were reptar bars, made right here in my kitchen. Clean-up was a pain, though. Green sticky stuff everywhere. But yeah, that was my adventure with making cartoon food real. Done it now, probably won’t rush to do it again soon, but it killed an afternoon.
