NBA Too Small Celebration: Is It a Foul or Just Trash Talk?

Okay, so check it, today I’m gonna break down how I messed around with that whole “nba too small celebration” thing. It was fun, kinda dumb, but hey, that’s why we do it, right?

NBA Too Small Celebration: Is It a Foul or Just Trash Talk?

First off, the idea. I saw Ja Morant do it, and thought, “Damn, that’s cocky. I gotta try that.” I’m nowhere near NBA level, obviously, but the trash talk potential was too good to pass up.

So, I started practicing. Sounds dumb, I know, but you gotta sell it. The point isn’t just to gesture; it’s gotta have that oomph. I spent like, a solid hour in my driveway, dribbling, pulling up, and then hitting ’em with the “too small” gesture after a make.

  • Dribbling drills: Keeping the ball low, quick crossovers. You know, the basics.
  • Shooting practice: Free throws, some jumpers. Nothing fancy.
  • The Gesture: Key part. Snappy, pointed, and with the right amount of swagger. I even watched some YouTube clips of NBA players doing it to get the form right.

Next up, the game. We had our usual Sunday pickup game at the park. Perfect opportunity. I was feeling pretty good, hitting a few shots early. Then came the moment. I drove to the basket, pulled up for a little floater, and it went in. BOOM! “TOO SMALL!” I yelled, pointing at the dude guarding me. He was taller than me, which made it even better.

The reaction was… mixed. Some people laughed. Some were just confused. The dude I gestured at got a little salty. He started playing me tighter, which honestly, made it harder to score. Karma, maybe?

After a few more possessions, I tried it again after another make. This time, I got a warning. “Hey, man, cut that out. It’s kinda lame,” someone said. Fair enough. I dialed it back.

The aftermath. Was it worth it? Eh, kinda. It was funny for a bit, but it definitely has diminishing returns. Plus, it makes you a target. People start playing harder against you, and you gotta back it up. Which, honestly, I couldn’t always do.

Learnings?

  • Know your audience. It might fly with some crowds, but others will just think you’re a tool.
  • Be ready to back it up. If you’re gonna talk trash, you better be able to play.
  • Don’t overdo it. A little goes a long way.

So, yeah, that’s my “nba too small celebration” story. It was a fun experiment, but probably not something I’ll be doing every game. Maybe I’ll stick to the occasional “and one!” scream instead.
