My Sock Phase

It started pretty innocently. My feet get cold easily, especially at night, so socks in bed became a habit. Then, working from home, slippers felt weird sometimes, so I just kept socks on all day. It just felt… normal? Cleaner, maybe? I didn’t really think about it, just pulled on a fresh pair every morning and often kept them on until the next. Showering was pretty much the only guaranteed sock-free time.

Comfort was the main driver, I guess. The feeling of soft fabric instead of bare feet on the floor, especially colder floors in winter. It became automatic. Get dressed? Socks on. Lounging around? Socks on. Sleeping? Yep, socks on.

Starting to Wonder

Then a couple of things made me pause. I noticed my feet sometimes felt kinda damp, even with cotton socks. Not sweaty exactly, but just… not airy. And occasionally, the skin between my toes seemed a bit irritated, nothing major, but enough to make me think. Was constantly covering them up the best idea?

I didn’t rush to any conclusions. I wasn’t having huge problems, you know? But the question popped into my head: Is this constant sock-wearing actually good for my feet?

The Experiment: Going Barefoot (Sometimes)

So, I decided to try something different. Just a small experiment.

  • First step: No socks in bed. This felt WEIRD initially. My feet were definitely colder for the first few nights. I almost gave up, but I stuck with it.

  • Third step: Walking around the house barefoot more often, especially on warmer days.

What I Found Out (For Me)

Okay, so what happened? Well, after a few weeks, things changed a bit.

My feet definitely felt drier overall. That slightly damp feeling pretty much disappeared. The irritation between my toes? Cleared up completely. Maybe just airing them out helped, simple as that.

Sleeping without socks took some getting used to, but eventually, it felt more natural. I realized my feet didn’t get as cold as I thought, or maybe my body just adjusted.

Walking barefoot at home? Actually kinda nice, feeling the different textures of the floor. Plus, it felt like my feet were getting stronger, if that makes sense?

So, Is It Bad? My Takeaway

Look, I’m not a doctor. But from my own little trial? Wearing socks all the time, especially synthetic ones, probably wasn’t the best for my feet. Giving them time to breathe, dry out, and just be feet seems important.

So, bad all the time? Maybe not “bad” like eating poison, but probably not optimal either. Letting your feet air out seems like common sense I just ignored for a while. It was a simple change, but one I’m sticking with.
