My Go at the Butler Cabin Interview This Year
So, I decided to throw my hat in the ring for that Butler Cabin thing for 2024. Heard about it kinda late, actually, just stumbled across it online when I was looking for something completely different. Seemed interesting, figured, why not?

First hurdle was the application itself. Didn’t look too bad at first glance, but boy, it went deep. They wanted essays, examples, specifics about projects I’d done ages ago. Took me a solid weekend, digging through old files and trying to remember details. Felt like I was writing my life story just to get considered. Sent it off and pretty much put it out of my mind, figured it was a long shot anyway.
Weeks went by, maybe a month? Then an email landed in my inbox. Short and sweet, basically saying, ‘Come talk to us’. Honestly, I was surprised. My first reaction was a mix of ‘Oh cool!’ and ‘Oh man, now what?’.
Getting Ready for the Talk
Preparation was a bit tricky. There wasn’t a whole lot of info out there about what exactly they ask. I did the usual stuff:
- Went over my application again, tried to anticipate questions based on what I wrote.
- Thought about my main reasons for applying, tried to get those clear in my head.
- Did a quick practice run answering common interview questions out loud. Felt a bit silly doing it, but probably helped.
Mostly, though, it felt like I was just guessing. Couldn’t find much from people who’d done it before, so I decided just to be myself and answer honestly.
The Interview Day Itself
The interview day arrived. It was online, which saved me a trip, thankfully. Logged in a bit early, checked my connection like ten times. There were two people interviewing me. They seemed alright, pretty calm. Started with the standard ‘walk us through your background’ kind of chat.

Then they started digging into the specifics from my application. Asked some tough questions about challenges I’d faced on a particular project. I remember one question really made me pause. It wasn’t unfair, just required me to think on my feet about how I handled a tricky team situation. I fumbled a bit initially but managed to pull together an answer. It wasn’t super smooth, but it was honest.
The whole thing lasted about an hour. Felt longer! When it was done, I logged off feeling kind of drained. You know that feeling after an interview where you just replay everything in your head? Yeah, that was me for the rest of the day.
Haven’t heard back yet. They said it would take a while, so it’s just a waiting game now. Overall, it was definitely an experience. Pushed me to think hard about my past work and what I actually want to do next. Whether I get in or not, going through the process itself was kinda useful. Just gotta wait and see now.
