This here story is all about that 2018 Buffalo Sabres. That’s a hockey team, you know. Hockey, that game they play on ice. They play in that big league, the NHL, they call it. Big, strong fellas, all of ’em.
Well, back in 2018, that Buffalo Sabres team, they had a bit of a rough time. They played a whole bunch of games, 82 of ’em I think. They won some, lost some. Ended up with 33 wins, that’s what I heard. And 39 losses. And 10 of them losses, they went to overtime. It’s like extra innings in baseball, but more icy. 76 points they got. Not the best, not the worst.
They had some good players, though. I remember hearing about this one young fella, Rasmus Dahlin. He weren’t the captain back then, no sir. But he was a good one, skated real fast. He’s the captain now, I hear. They said he wanted to be a leader. Guess he got his wish. Signed a big, long contract, too. Eight years! That’s a long time to be skating around on that ice. They said he signed it in 2023, so in 2018 he was new to the team.
The Buffalo Sabres roster 2018, they had all sorts of fellas. Some were born in America, some were born in other places, like Canada. It’s cold up there, good for hockey players I guess. You know, these players get paid a lot of money, more money than I’ve ever seen. Good for them, I say. It’s hard work, what they do. They gotta be tough.
Now, their goalie, I hear folks say he wasn’t the best that year. He let in more goals than he should have, they said. Something about save percentage, goals against, expected goals. I don’t rightly understand all that, but it sounds important. They said he could have done better. But hey, everyone has a bad year sometimes.
But the year before, in 2007, lord have mercy, that Sabres team was something else! They won 53 games! That’s a lot of wins. They won some trophy, too. President’s Trophy, they called it. Must be a big, shiny thing. 113 points they had that year. Good year, that was.

They got these things called power plays. When the other team gets a penalty, they get to have more players on the ice. It’s supposed to be easier to score then. I heard that the Sabres, they had a good power play percentage in one of their seasons. I don’t know when, though. Not 2018, I think. They did good on that, though.
And then there’s this thing called the Stanley Cup playoffs. It’s like a tournament, at the end of the season. The best teams play each other, and the winner gets the Stanley Cup. It’s a big, fancy cup, I’ve seen pictures. In 2019, this other team, the Carolina Hurricanes, they made it to the playoffs. Good for them. They probably had a good year.
In 2018, though, the Buffalo Sabres Season, they weren’t in the playoffs. They didn’t win enough games, I guess. That’s okay, though. There’s always next year, as they say. Maybe they’ll do better next time. They gotta keep practicing, keep working hard. That’s what my old pappy used to say. “Hard work pays off,” he’d say. And he was right, most of the time.
They had all sorts of players, the Buffalo Sabres. Some were good at scoring goals, some were good at stopping goals. Some were big and strong, some were fast and quick. They all had to work together, though. That’s the important thing. Just like a family, they gotta stick together, through thick and thin.
One of them fellas, I heard he was the all-time leading goal scorer for the Sabres. I don’t recall his name. He must have been a real good player, though. To score that many goals, you gotta be good. You gotta have a good shot, and you gotta be quick on your feet. It ain’t easy, I’ll tell you that.
Well, that’s about all I know about that 2018 Buffalo Sabres team. They had their ups and downs, just like everyone else. They won some, they lost some. But they kept playing, kept trying. And that’s all you can ask for, really. Just keep trying, keep doing your best. That’s what life’s all about, ain’t it? Just doing your best.
