Okay, so the other day I was watching some golf on TV, and the commentators kept talking about the “loft” of the clubs. I’d heard the term before, but I didn’t really get it. So, I decided to figure out what the loft of a 9-iron specifically is, once and for all.

First, I hit up Google. You know, the usual “what is golf club loft” kind of search. Turns out, loft is basically the angle of the club face. It’s what makes the ball go up in the air. The higher the loft, the higher the ball goes, but it won’t travel as far. Makes sense, right?

Then, I zeroed in on the 9-iron. I found out that 9-irons are generally used for shorter shots, the kind where you need to get the ball up quickly and have it land softly. I checked a few different websites, and it seemed like most people were saying that the loft of a 9-iron is somewhere in the 40-ish degree range.

- One site even listed a range from 40 to 44 degrees.

So, what did I learn? I discovered that the loft of a 9-iron is around 40 to 44 degrees. This angle helps launch the ball high for those shorter, softer shots onto the green. There’s no one, single, perfect answer, I guess it changes a bit from club to club. But I have a good idea to hold onto, now. Next time I am at the range I have a better idea what to look for.
