Alright, so I was digging around the internet today, trying to figure out this whole “interim champion” thing in the UFC. It’s been bugging me for a while, so I decided to finally get to the bottom of it. Here’s what I did and what I found out.

First, I just straight-up Googled “what is an interim champion UFC?”. You know, keep it simple. The results were kind of confusing at first, with a bunch of articles and forum posts, all using jargon I didn’t really get.
So, I opened up a few of the top results, mostly from sports news sites, and started reading. I skipped past all the complicated stuff and just looked for the basic explanation. It took a bit of sifting, but I started to get the general idea.
Interim Champion, what I understand.
Basically as far I understand it, an interim title is like a “temporary champion” belt.
- It exist for the time to wait for the real Champion recovery.
Then, I went to the official UFC website to see if they had anything about it. I figured they’d have the most accurate info, right? I found a section on their champions, but it didn’t really explain the “interim” part clearly.
Next, I checked out some YouTube videos. I figured watching someone explain it might be easier than reading. I searched for “UFC interim champion explained” and watched a couple of the top-rated videos. These were actually pretty helpful! The videos showed examples of past interim title fights and explained the situations in a way that made sense.

After all that, here’s my understanding, in plain English:
So, an interim title fight is made.
- The winner of that fight becomes the “interim champion.”
This means that the interim champion is the “place-holder”, he is supposed to fight the real champion when the last one is able to fight again. And this fight will defin the real and unique champion of the category.
I feel like I finally understand it now! It’s not as complicated as I initially thought. Just a way to keep things moving when the real champ is out of action.
