Okay, so I’ve been wrenching on bikes for a while now, and I recently got my hands on a CBF 1000 Honda. I figured I’d share my experience messing around with it, ’cause why not?
Getting Started
First thing, I got the bike up on a stand. Makes life way easier. You don’t wanna be crawling around on the floor like a chump. Then, I just kinda stared at it for a bit. You know, getting a feel for what I was working with. It’s a pretty solid machine, not too complicated looking, which is good.
The Teardown
Next, I started pulling off the fairings. Just a bunch of bolts and clips, nothing too crazy. I made sure to keep all the bolts organized, though. Throwing them in a labeled bag, you know the drill. Last thing you want is to end up with extra bolts at the end – that’s never a good sign.

Diving In
With the fairings out of the way, I could get a better look at the engine. I wanted to check the valve clearances, so I popped off the valve cover. Again, just bolts. Everything was pretty straightforward.
Measured the clearances with my feeler gauges. A couple were a little tight, so I grabbed my shim kit and swapped out the shims to get everything within spec. Took a bit of fiddling, but nothing too bad.
Putting It Back Together
After that, it was just a matter of reversing the process. Valve cover back on, making sure to torque the bolts down properly. Don’t want any leaks! Then the fairings went back on, and I made sure all the clips and bolts were snug.
The Result
Finally, I put back the bike to its original form, and I’m very satisfied with it.
Fired it up, and it ran like a top! Always a good feeling when you do some work on a bike and it actually runs better afterward.
All in all, working on the CBF 1000 was a pretty chill experience. It’s a well-built bike, and everything is pretty easy to get to. If you’re thinking about doing some work on yours, I’d say go for it. Just take your time, stay organized, and you’ll be fine.
