2014 US Open: Relive the Biggest Upsets and Victories

Man, the 2014 US Open was a wild ride! I remember it like it was yesterday. That year, Rafael Nadal, who everyone thought would win again, had to pull out because he got hurt. Bummer, right?

So, I got really into it, watching every match I could. The whole thing takes like, 15 days, with tons of tennis, crazy crowds in New York, and all that Grand Slam hype.

I started following Kei Nishikori, this awesome Japanese player. He was the underdog, but he totally shocked everyone by beating Novak Djokovic, who was ranked number one. I was glued to the screen, watching Nishikori win that four-set match. He made history as the first Japanese guy to get to a Grand Slam final. Seriously, it was epic!

Then there was Marin Cilic. He played against Roger Federer, another top player, and Cilic just dominated. He started strong and never let up. I couldn’t believe how well he played. I kept thinking, “This guy is on fire!”

The Final Showdown

  • Setting the Stage: So, the final match was set: Nishikori versus Cilic.
  • Unexpected Finalists: Nobody saw this coming, two underdogs battling it out for the US Open title.
  • Cilic’s Dominance: On September 8, 2014, Cilic just crushed it. He beat Nishikori 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. It wasn’t even close.
  • Watching Live: I was watching it live, and it was insane. Cilic was like a machine, and Nishikori, who played great to get there, just couldn’t keep up.

I remember jumping up and down when Cilic won. It was such an unexpected ending to the tournament, and I was so happy for him. I mean, this was one of the most surprising US Open finals ever!

I kept thinking, “Wow, this is why I love tennis!” You never know what’s going to happen. That year, the US Open was held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City. It was just an unforgettable tournament, and I’ll always remember watching it all go down.

From then on, I started following both Cilic and Nishikori. I even tried to play like them on the court, though I’m nowhere near as good, haha! That tournament really got me hooked on tennis, and I’ve been a huge fan ever since.
