2001 Harley Sportster: Is it still a good bike to buy in this day and age?

Okay, so I gotta tell you about this 2001 Harley Sportster I messed with a while back. This wasn’t my first rodeo with bikes, but this one, it had its own quirks.

First off, I got my hands on this thing, and it was mostly stock. You know, not all hacked up by the previous owner. That’s a big deal for me, ’cause I don’t like cleaning up someone else’s mess. Plus, I managed to dig up some old photos of the original owner. I guess I just like seeing where these bikes came from, you know?

Now, this bike, it’s a 2001 model. Some folks will tell you to steer clear of certain years, like they’re bad luck or something. I heard that about the 2001, 2004, and a few others. People say they had problems, like they were put together on a Friday afternoon or something. But honestly, I think every bike has its own personality.

I started by giving it a good once-over. Checked the oil, the tires, the usual stuff. I even dove into some forums and reviews, just to see what other people were saying. Some folks complain that these Sportsters are slow, or too small, or too heavy. I guess it depends on what you’re used to, right?

  • Checked for leaks – none, thank goodness.
  • Wiped down the whole bike, just to get a feel for it.
  • Inspected the wiring, which looked pretty decent, surprisingly.

Anyway, I took it for a spin. It ran, but it wasn’t exactly love at first ride. It felt a bit… sluggish, maybe? Not like, dangerously slow, but not exactly a speed demon either. I played around with the adjustments, trying to get it dialed in. It was a bit of a dance, you know?

Tuning and Tweaking

I’m no expert mechanic, but I know my way around a wrench. I adjusted the carburetor a bit, tightened some loose bolts, and even swapped out the spark plugs. That seemed to help a little. It’s like giving the bike a little pep talk, telling it to wake up. I’m pretty sure it was running a little richer after that.

After a few days of tinkering, it started to feel a bit better. Not perfect, but better. It’s like we were starting to understand each other. I could feel what it liked and didn’t like. I guess that’s what it’s all about, right? Building a relationship with the machine.

I know some guys are all about keeping these bikes original, like they’re museum pieces or something. And that’s cool, I respect that. But for me, I like to make them my own. Not necessarily chopping them up, but just, you know, making them run right, making them feel right. I considered slapping a new exhaust on it but ultimately decided against it this time.

In the end, I didn’t keep this bike. I sold it to a guy who was looking for a project, and I think he was pretty happy with it. Hopefully, he’s still out there, riding it, keeping the spirit alive. You know, you buy these things and it is hard to determine what the true value is, but at the end of the day, Harley’s are known to keep their resale value and this thing was a 2001. That’s a win win for everyone. Me, I moved on to other projects. But this 2001 Harley Sportster, it taught me a few things. And that’s what it’s all about, right? Learning, tinkering, and enjoying the ride.
